Election of Norma Lucía Piña, demonstrates autonomy: AMLO

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador affirmed that the appointment of Norma Lucía Piña Hernández as president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) and of the Federal Judicial Council (CJF), who “has always voted against” their initiatives, demonstrates that the Judiciary is no longer an “appendage” of the federal Executive.

Currently, he assured, “there is autonomy” between the powers of the Union.

“Our adversaries will never accept that, but it is the truth. We do not impose anything on the Court and it is so evident, even if they do not want to accept it, that President Norma Piña has always voted against the initiatives that we have defended. The moment we are living in is unique, no one can say that there is subordination, as it was before, of the powers to the Executive”.

He narrated that for decades the Executive was “the power of powers” since the Legislative and Judicial “were appendages, they were subordinate. From the presidency (of the Republic) orders were given, and that is over.”

After highlighting the “historical fact that for the first time a woman is going to be president of the Supreme Court of Justice since 1825, almost two centuries, so this is very important,” she hoped that “in an independent, autonomous manner, carry out a reform in the Judiciary, which is urgent, due to the corruption that prevails ”, although he ruled out that Minister Piña Hernández is the one who promotes it.

The Court, he explained, can no longer reverse the constitutional reforms promoted by him, among which he mentioned the one that created the National Guard (GN) for the Armed Forces to assist in public security tasks, including the Revocation of the Mandate presidential, elimination of the jurisdiction of the President of the Republic and of the remission of taxes, and to consider corruption a serious crime.

During the first plenary session of the Court chaired by Piña Hernández, the draft sentence prepared by Margarita Ríos Farjat was unanimously approved, which declared the validity of various provisions of the Law on Means of Appeal in Political-Electoral Matters and Citizen Participation of Coahuila, disputed by PT through action of unconstitutionality.
