Elections 2022 in Oaxaca: What is elected and what should you know before voting?

This Sunday, June 5, 2022, Oaxaca will be one of the six states where there will be local elections. The polls will be ready to receive citizens from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., where the governor will be chosen through the vote to replace Alejandro Murat Hinojosa (PRI).

There are three men and two women who are in the contest:

• Alejandra Garcia Morlan by the Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) party.
• Natividad Diaz Jimenez by the National Action Party (PAN).
• Solomon Jara Cross by the alliance Together We Will Make History (Morena, Green Ecologist Party of Mexico and the Popular Unity Local Party).
• Alejandro Aviles Alvarez by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in alliance with the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD).
• Bersain Lopez Lopez by the New Alliance Party (Honeycomb).

The authorities highlighted that basic sanitary measures will be carried out during the electoral process: mandatory use of face masks, healthy distance and disinfection of spaces.

The quick count of the PREP system will take place on June 5 after the closing of the polls and until Monday, June 6, when the electoral authorities will announce the preliminary results of the election.

How will the new government receive Oaxaca?

Inequality and poverty will be one of the main challenges for the next governor. In Oaxaca, 6 out of 10 inhabitants live in some degree of poverty, which in absolute terms is equivalent to 2.6 million people who have problems acquiring the basic basket and fundamental social rights.

According to figures from Coneval (National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policies), the most persistent social deficiencies in Oaxaca are access to social security and access to basic housing services, such as water, light and electricity. .

The economic and social backwardness, especially in rural communities, will be another of the great challenges that the new administration will face.

This June 5, there are just over 3 million citizens over the age of 18 who are called to the polls to elect their next ruler.
