The wife of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, the 32-year-old former model and businesswoman known as the Kardashian of Sinaloa, will go to prison. A Washington court on Tuesday sentenced her to three years in prison for the crimes of drug trafficking and money laundering, of which she had pleaded guilty. Coronel, who has US and Mexican citizenship, is the third wife of the bloodthirsty drug trafficker, sentenced in 2019 to life imprisonment after his extradition to the United States.
Shortly after 12 noon, the woman addressed the court in Spanish to show regret. “I am here, before you, to ask your forgiveness,” he said through an interpreter. From the 36-month prison sentence, we must subtract the nine months that she has already been in the shade, since she was arrested last February at the Dulles airport, on the outskirts of the city of Washington.
Coronel had reached an agreement with the prosecution by which he admitted to having operated as a courier between Guzmán and the Sinaloa cartel, while the capo was imprisoned in the Altiplano center, in Mexico, after his arrest in 2014. That communication channel it was the one that allowed El Chapo to plan his escape in 2015. It was the end of his escape: after the new arrest in 2016, he was extradited to the United States and did not step on the street again.
