The Inegi recently published the results of the National Occupation and Employment Survey for the second quarter of 2022, in which the following data stand out; In Mexico there are more than 99 million people 15 years of age or older, of which 59,338,419 people are economically active, and of these 57,420,677 people are employed. This last figure represents 2,177,929 more people compared to 2021, that is, an increase of 2%. Of the employed population, 60% corresponds to men and 40% to women; 34,528,782 and 22,891,895 million people respectively. In both cases there is an increase compared to the same period of the previous year, 1% in men and 0.9% in women.
Regarding the sector of economic activity, 6.7 million people work in the primary sector, which represents 11.7% of the total number of employed people; 14.4 million in high school, that is, 25.1% of the total; and 35.9 million in the tertiary sector, 62.5% of the total employed people. In the comparison to the same period of 2021, the figures were 6.8, 13.8 and 34.3 million people respectively. The main increases occur in the subsectors of restaurants and lodging services with more than half a million people employed, in manufacturing with 482 thousand people, commerce with 465 thousand, and professional, financial and corporate services with 301 thousand new people employed. .
The increase in employed persons had a higher proportion in subordinate and paid workers (68.3%), while the rest were self-employed persons (22.9%). In the first group there was an increase of 1.4 million people, and in the second group the increase was 468 thousand people, both compared to the same period in 2021. When analyzing by gender, subordinate and paid women represent a 67.8% of the total women, while men 68.6%: which implies that the people who work on their own account by gender are 23.3% and 22.1% respectively. The increase in annual terms is 253 thousand women and 215 thousand men.
These figures show a small increase in economic activity in general, although clearly below expectations. The growth rate of the economy is far from the estimated 2.5%. It is worth highlighting the figures in terms of type of employment and by gender, in both areas the gaps are being reduced and that will always be good news.
