Encinas reveals that Tomás Zerón did not accept opportunity criteria

The Undersecretary of Human Rights, Population and Migration of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob), Alejandro Encinas and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador assured that characters from the “old regime” sought to demerit and “throw away” the new investigation that was carried out to know the whereabouts of the 43 disappeared students from the rural normal school of Ayotzinapa.

During his morning press conference, the federal Executive assured that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) sought to blow up the investigation of the Truth Commission, headed by Encinas.

When asked if he was referring to former prosecutor Omar Gómez Trejo in this matter, the president stated that “no, others. It is that there are many. This is a regime that has not finished dying yet, as I have already said. We are (…) it is a process of transition, the old does not finish dying and the new does not finish being born”.

For his part, Undersecretary Encinas acknowledged that he traveled to Israel to offer the former head of the Criminal Investigation Agency, of the then Attorney General’s Office, Tomás Zerón, a criterion of opportunity.

“The contact was made through his lawyers, it was even an initiative of the lawyers themselves, and we held a meeting where he was openly offered guarantees that the criterion of opportunity that he could reach with the judicial authority would be met in a timely manner. He didn’t accept it, it’s that simple.

“And although there has still been contact with the lawyers, to date they have not agreed to assume this commitment,” said the undersecretary.

The previous meeting was revealed in a report by the American newspaper The New York Times in which it was also stated that the undersecretary would have recognized that the evidence collected in the investigation of the Truth Commission that he heads is weak.

Regarding the latter, the official said he was surprised by said revelation while assuring that his statements “were not like that.”

“Much less, it would be a lack of respect for the colleagues of my work team who are accompanied in a very serious and professional manner,” said the Undersecretary of the Interior.

He added that the report must be seen in a comprehensive manner and that he commented to the media outlet that 154 events have been identified to put this puzzle together.
