Encinas sought to agree with Tomás Zerón to solve the Iguala case

An investigation by The New York Times indicated that Alejandro Encinas, Undersecretary for Human Rights and Population, would have met in Israel with Tomás Zerón de Lucio, a former official accused of altering and constructing evidence in the Ayotzinapa case, with the aim of requesting information about the events. in exchange for support from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

According to audios obtained by the American newspaper, last February, a month after Mexico requested the extradition of Zerón de Lucio to the government of Israel, the country where he went into exile, Encinas Rodríguez traveled to have a meal of almost three hours with him.

In said event, the newspaper stated that the undersecretary asked the former director of the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC) for information on the remains of the students who disappeared in 2014, in Iguala, Guerrero.

According to the conversation reported by the newspaper, Encinas would have offered the former official the “support of the president” in exchange for his cooperation.

“Help me unravel all this (…) I guarantee the support of the president (…) The president does not mind putting people in jail,” were arguments that the current government official would have given Zerón.

According to Alejandro Encinas, in an interview he gave to the Times, he was only trying to persuade Tomás Zerón to cooperate, since he considered that he had valuable information; In addition, he indicated that the only thing he promised was that President López Obrador would support an agreement that could include a reduced prison sentence.

The New York Times affirmed that, in spite of everything, the trip to Israel did not obtain great advances in the investigation since it was not possible to contribute new information to the investigation of the disappearance of the 43 students of the Ayotzinapa normal school.

flimsy case

The New York Times noted that Encinas himself acknowledged that much of the information presented in the Truth Commission report could not have been confirmed.

This report, it is worth mentioning, links the Mexican Army to the disappearance of the 43 normalistas from the rural normal school of Ayotzinapa where, the report states, the militia had infiltrated one of its elements with the aim of monitoring the activities of the students.

“There is an important percentage, very important, that is all invalidated,” Encinas told the Times.

The report stated that Encinas’ decision to travel to Israel and meet with the former director of the AIC would have been a decision made after President López Obrador asked him to report on the case.

“The president told me, ‘what happened? He already informs ‘(…) We have two years of governments left and we have to give results and the prosecution has to prosecute, ”added Encinas.
