The commander of the Russian Naval War Fleet, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, announced that the atomic “Leopard” submarines will be equipped with new weapons during the modernization.
He explained that, “within the framework of the modernization, it is decided to expand the range of missile models and torpedoes used, reduce the engine sound power and improve conditions for the crew,” and other specifications of the submarine.
He pointed out that the submarine will soon undergo the final stage of maintenance and modernization work, adding that the electronic systems for weapons, the command system, control, communication, navigation and other systems have been replaced.
It is reported that the submarine “Leopard” (Project 971) entered service in 1992, and is intended to fight enemy submarines and ship groups and to strike targets on the ground.
