Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in a video call, that he wants to open a new page with the European Union.
A statement by the Turkish presidency indicated that Erdogan said: “There is a new opportunity to strengthen relations between Turkey and the Union, but some countries are trying to create a crisis to sabotage this positive agenda,” without mentioning the statement to those countries.
The Turkish president called on the leaders of the Union to review the agreement concluded in 2016 on the issue of migrants, saying that “this review will be the key to a positive agenda with Europe.”

On Thursday, the European Union paid Ankara the sum of 6 billion euros, which it pledged under the concluded agreement.
Regarding the dispute with Greece and Cyprus, Erdogan stressed that his country’s “role is constructive,” accusing Greece of refusing to negotiate.
European leaders imposed sanctions on Ankara, during a summit held in Brussels last week, for its “unilateral actions and provocations” in the gas-rich eastern Mediterranean, where Turkey disputes sovereignty over sea areas with Greece and Cyprus.
