Today, Tuesday, Ethiopian police released a photographer for “Reuters” agency, Komira Jimisho, after being arrested without charge for 12 days.
Police told his lawyer, Melkamo Ojo, that the dimensions of his investigation included accusations of spreading false information, contacting groups fighting the government, and disturbing public peace. However, Ojo said he had not seen evidence.
Reuters Editor-in-Chief Stephen J. Adler said: “We are delighted that Coomera was released and returned to his family … His release today confirms that he has done nothing wrong.”
He added, “Coomera’s work shows his professionalism and impartiality, and he is part of the Reuters team that provides reports from Ethiopia that are fair, independent and non-aligned.”
“Journalists like Coomera should be allowed to report news for the common good without fear of harassment or harm wherever they are,” he said.
