A number of European officials expressed their shock at the news coming from Washington, stressing the need to show restraint and respect the law in the country.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, noted that “watching what is happening tonight in Washington DC is a shock.”
He said, “The American Congress was the temple of democracy. We are confident that the United States will ensure a peaceful transfer of power to Biden.”
For her part, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, “I believe in the power of American institutions and democracy. The peaceful transfer of power is the essence of the matter.”
She added, “Joe Biden won the election. I look forward to working with him as President of the United States of America.”
For his part, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stressed that “in the eyes of the world, American democracy appears tonight under siege.”
He said, “This is an invisible attack on American democracy, its institutions and the rule of law. This is not America. The results of the November 3 elections must be fully respected.”
He continued: “The strength of American democracy will prevail over the extremists.”
The Secretary-General of the “NATO”, Jens Stoltenberg, described the protests in Washington as “horrific”.
He said, “The results of the democratic American elections must be respected.”
