The European Union condemned the amendments imposed by China on the electoral system in Hong Kong, and threatened additional measures against Beijing for violating the “one country, two systems” principle, which it pledged to implement.
“The decision taken by China today constitutes a new violation of the principle of” one country, two systems “, said the European Union Commissioner for Security and Foreign Policy Josep Borrell in a statement issued on behalf of the 27 member states of the European Union, adding that the European Union will consider taking additional measures against China.

Borrell stressed in his statement that this decision “will have a major impact on democratic responsibility and political pluralism in Hong Kong.”
In the statement, he called on “the Chinese and Hong Kong authorities to restore confidence in the democratic process in Hong Kong and stop persecuting those who adhere to democratic values.”
“The European Union will consider additional measures and will pay increasing attention to the situation in Hong Kong in the context of the comprehensive relations between the European Union and China,” Borrell said.
The European reaction came in the wake of the Chinese parliament’s approval of amendments to the electoral system in Hong Kong, giving Beijing the power to prevent opposition candidates from running for legislative elections in the autonomous city.
