Excess mortality reaches almost 600,000 cases in Mexico

From March 2020 to last September, excess mortality from all causes reached 595,263 deaths, which include the more than 400,000 caused by Covid-19 and the more than 180,000 caused by other causes, reported Jorge Alcocer Varela.

“The decrease or interruption of hospitalization services to attend to the large influx of Covid-19 cases undoubtedly affected the capacity of the National Health System to adequately treat many ailments. This resulted in deaths that otherwise could have been prevented or postponed,”

The Secretary of Health explained that “during the 30 months that the Covid-19 pandemic has lasted, I speak from March 2020 to September 2022, one million 756,263 deaths have been observed, while one million 281,000 deaths were expected, according to trends recorded between 2015 and 2019”.

In his appearance before the Health Commission of the Chamber of Senators for the gloss of the Fourth Government Report of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he explained that in the referred period “the excess mortality from all causes reached 595,263 deaths, which include both the more than 400,000 caused by Covid-19 and the more than 180,000 caused by other causes.
