Cairo – With the advent of winter, Egypt witnessed successive frost waves that caused the accumulation of snow in separate areas for the first time, in contradiction to the usual warm weather during this period of the year. This prompted meteorologists to review the country’s climate, which is known to be hot, dry in summer, and warm and rainy in winter.
Iman Shaker, Director General of Remote Sensing at the General Meteorological Authority, said that Egypt’s weather has become very hot and humid in summer and very cold in winter.
She added – during televised statements – that there is a committee composed of members of the Meteorological Authority and university specialists to study changing the description of Egypt’s climate, stressing that as soon as the new description is issued, the Ministry of Education will be addressed to change information related to weather in the study curricula.
In some areas, the temperature reached less than zero, and in Cairo and other governorates, it is no longer surprising that the minimum temperature reached 5 degrees, while it was no less than 10 degrees at this time during the previous years.
According to weather forecasts, the country is currently witnessing, for a period of two weeks, a state of violent and unprecedented weather fluctuations accompanied by rainfall, due to the presence of an air depression coming from southern and eastern Europe that began last Wednesday.

In front of Parliament, Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad spoke – early last week – about the climatic changes that the whole world is witnessing and that Egypt is consequently affected by.
She pointed to the Egyptians’ feeling of the effects of climate changes, including frost waves, high temperatures, water shortages, drought, as well as soil salinization and sea level rise.
It touched on the damage to agricultural crops and the increase in traffic accidents due to fluctuations in the weather.
The fishing movement stopped due to bad weather in Kafr El-Sheikh governorate for about two weeks during this January, and the governorate produces 40% of the country’s fish production, according to statements by government officials.
Because of climate change, olive production fell by between 60 and 80 percent during last year’s harvest, according to the head of the meteorology department at the Agricultural Research Center.
During her speech before the Arab Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives, the Minister of Environment explained that there are measures taken by Egypt to confront climate change, including the launch of the national strategy for climate change, which works on several levels, including the level of renewable energy, aiming to increase its percentage of the total energy produced to 42% by 2035.
She added that the government has 30 national projects to address climate change, including air-conditioning projects through rationalizing water use, lining canals at the level of Egyptian villages, and treatment plants for sewage projects.
