The American oil and gas giant ExxonMobil pledged on Tuesday to make its operations carbon neutral by 2050, seeking to reduce its environmental impact without making any promises about the energy products used by its customers.
ExxonMobil expressed in a statement that it has the ambition to bring its net emission of greenhouse gases to zero level 1 and 2, committing that its operations and those of its partners absorb as much carbon as they emit.
Unlike other oil giants like TotalHowever, the US company did not refer to the emissions generated by the use of the hydrocarbons it produces, such as the gasoline burned by cars.
The group has its strategy already underway to reduce its emissions by 2030, but also with its investments in lower-emission solutions, such as carbon capture and storage projects.
ExxonMobil He also warned of the need to implement environmental policies that allow “accelerating the deployment of key technologies at the pace and scale required to be able to sustain a future of zero net emissions.”
The group initially plans to prioritize energy efficiency measures, methane emission mitigation, equipment upgrades, and the elimination of regular flue gas operations.
Then it points to projects of electricity cogeneration and steam and to provide energy for its operations through renewable or low-carbon methods.
The company, which like all major oil companies is under increasing pressure from citizens and investors concerned about the climate change, plans to present a detailed roadmap to achieve its objectives in 2023.
