The win – which was Porto’s 100th in European Cup competition – moved them into second place, three points behind leaders City, who have a full haul of six following their 3-0 victory at Marseille.
The open contest swung in the home side’s favour when they went ahead on 11 minutes after Olympiacos captain Andreas Bouchalakis misplaced a pass and Porto were able to swarm into the box, with Vieira providing the finishing touch for his first Champions League goal.
‘I worked hard for this,’ the 20-year-old Vieira said.
‘I deserved an opportunity and I’m happy to have scored my first goal in the Champions League.’
Olympiacos had their moments with winger Lazar Randjelovic forcing a good save from Agustin Marchesin, before wasting a golden chance when he shot tamely at the keeper with the goal at his mercy.
Sergio Oliveira made the points safe for the hosts as he grabbed Porto’s second goal
Sergio Oliveira made the points safe with a second goal for Porto five minutes from time with a header into the far corner from Moussa Marega’s cross.
‘We lost by details,’ Olympiacos defender Ruben Semedo said.
‘We had a large part of the possession, many chances, but we did not score and Porto were better in both of the major chances they had on our goal. We have to learn from this game in order not to make the same mistakes again.’
The Greek side next face home and away games against Manchester City next month that could go a long way to determining their knockout-stage chances, while Sergio Conceicao’s Porto will want to build on this win when they face Marseille.
