An Arizona father and son found a two-carat diamond while visiting Arkansas‘ Crater of Diamonds State Park.
Will Barnett and his son Marshall made the discovery on July 27 after his uncle encouraged them to go there.
After filling up a few buckets with dirt, the pair headed to the park’s south wash pavilion to sift through.
The father found the glittering gem at the bottom of his screen and said, ‘Hey Marshall, you should take a look at this,’ according to the park.
Staff at the park’s Diamond Discovery Center confirmed the gem they found was a two-carat diamond.

The Barnett’s diamond – which they named ‘Minor Find’ – is the 412th diamond and second largest registered at the park this year
‘You could tell they knew they had found something special from the smiles on their faces,’ said Park Interpreter Ashlyn Keys.
Crater of Diamonds State Park has a 37.5-acre diamond search area spread across the eroded surface of an ancient, diamond-bearing volcano.
It is one of the only places in the world where people can search for diamonds and take them home.
‘Wet sifting is one of the most effective methods to search for diamonds,’ said Keys.
‘The search area has two wash pavilions, with water troughs and tables, for visitors to wet sift. Using screens to separate dirt from the gravel allows you to go through more material in less time, giving a better chance of finding a diamond.’
The Barnett’s diamond – which they named ‘Minor Find’ – is the 412th diamond registered at the park this year and the second-largest diamond registered so far this year.
The average price of a two carat diamond can range between $2,000 to $30,000 depending on the cut, clarity and color
‘While examining the diamond, I looked out the office window and asked Mrs. Keys who the finders were, then said, “Wait, let me guess: they’re the ones shaking with excitement,”‘ said Park Superintendent Caleb Howell.
The two-carat diamond is rectangular in shape and has a light brown color.
‘The first thing I noticed was two large facets that really shined when the light hit them just right,’ Howell said.
The average price of a two carat diamond can range between $2,000 to $30,000 depending on the cut, clarity and color, according to WithClarity.com.
Will’s advice is anyone thinking of visiting the park is, ‘It’s worth looking, even if you don’t find a diamond.’
