A young family has been torn apart after a new father was burned alive in a house fire on New Years’ Day while his partner and two-week-old son were in hospital.
Gus Hayen, 31, and his partner Madeleine ‘Maddie’ Stuart-Wright bought their dream home in Monbulk, west of Melbourne, while excitedly waiting for the arrival of their first child.
The new parents spent just 14 days as a family-of-three after Saxon was born on December 18, 2020, before tragedy struck.

At about 4am on January 1, their property caught alight.
Maddie was still in hospital with Saxon while Gus, who was alone in the home in the early hours of the new year, was unable to escape the inferno.
Police found his body among the rubble.
Devastated family and friends set up a Go Fund Me page to help support Maddie, who is now a single mum.
They described Gus as ‘one of a kind’.
‘[He] took life in both hands and made the best out of any situation,’ they wrote.

‘He loved to travel and devoted his time to maintaining friendships and nurturing his family.’
Gus’ friend Clay took to Facebook to write a heartbreaking tribute.
‘A true legend, taken way too soon,’ he wrote.
‘I have so many memories with Gus, most of them at gigs, parties and being the only two stragglers left at the pub at the end of the night.
Maddie, an executive assistant, is now a single mum to Saxon, who was born on December 18
‘He was deep in thought, conversation and lived his life to the fullest, taking in every moment, exploring opportunity and reflecting upon it.’
Clay described the ‘one of a kind’ new father as a ‘wise, generous and compassionate man’
‘Gus left behind his amazing partner and newborn baby. They just started a new chapter and bought a house … Take it easy brother, catch you on the other side.’
The South-East Eagles Basketball Club also penned an emotional farewell post to their former member.
‘South East Eagles sends its love and deepest sympathies to the Hayen family after former player Gus has tragically passed away.’
‘Our thoughts are with their friends and family at this time.’
Police told Daily Mail Australia the investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing.
