RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Jake Haro, the father of a missing 7-month-old boy from Cabazon, pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder in his son’s death.
Appearing emotional in court, Haro also admitted to charges of assault on a child causing great bodily injury and filing a false police report. His sentencing is scheduled for November 3. The plea did not lead to any new information regarding the location of his son Emmanuel’s remains.
Meanwhile, the child’s mother, Rebecca Haro, pleaded not guilty to an amended criminal complaint. The specific details of the updated charges against her were not immediately disclosed.
The pleas were entered during a felony settlement conference, where both parents had initially been expected to discuss a potential plea agreement. Both Jake and Rebecca Haro had previously pleaded not guilty to murder.
The case began on August 14, when the parents reported that Emmanuel had been kidnapped from a parking lot in Yucaipa. However, investigators noted inconsistencies in their accounts, which led to multiple searches of the family’s Cabazon home and their subsequent arrest.
At the time of the arrests, Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin stated that prosecutors believed the infant had been subjected to ongoing abuse that ultimately resulted in his death.
