“I think we just have to assume that things will get worse,” Fauchi said during an interview on “CNN”, noting that “the United States is witnessing between 100 thousand and 200 thousand new infections every day.”
He added, “As soon as cases of Coronavirus begin to rise, an increase in hospitalizations will follow, and an increase in deaths due to this virus.”
And he continued, “I hope that we do not only reach the level of seeing more than 200,000 infections with this virus constantly, because the number of cases fluctuates,” noting that when “a person becomes infected with the virus, he gets hospitalized, and then dies.”
The chief infectious disease expert in the United States said: “It is highly expected that once this number of cases of Coronavirus increases, and in an intermittent manner every two weeks, you will get an increase in the number of hospitalizations.”
Fauci pointed out that the high wave of infections “has gone out of control in many respects,” adding that “due to the high number of cases, it is very difficult indeed to effectively identify, isolate, and trace contact.”
The director of the American Institute of Infectious Diseases said, “It is too late to try to control travel,” noting that “many Americans traveled at Christmas, despite warnings from public health officials.”
He appealed to those who have traveled “not to gather together large numbers of people after travel.”
He expressed his concern about the increase in cases of Coronavirus, and the expansion and magnitude of this boom, saying: “We will get an increase imposed on this increase, which may make January worse than December, and I hope that does not happen, but this is definitely possible.”
