Fears of casualties as serious crash closes A1 in County Durham
A major rescue operation has been launched after an articulated truck jack-knifed and burst into flames after crossing the central reservation on the A1(M) motorway outside Durham.
The highway has been closed in both directions between Bradbury and Carville after the incident.
The tractor unit crossed the wire central reservation before coming to a halt.
Emergency services are at the scene, which has seen the truck lying on its side on flames. At least three cars have suffered major damage.
It is not clear at this stage whether there have been any injuries.

Durham Constabulary are appealing for information, following the smash which took place at 6.30pm.
A police spokesperson said: ‘There is now a full closure of the A1(M) in both directions between Bradbury and Carrville due to a collision. Emergency services are currently on the scene and we would ask all motorists to avoid the area and find an alternative route.
‘We’re issuing an urgent appeal for anyone with any dashcam footage of the collision to contact us. Please ring our control room on 101 quoting incident number 322 of July 15.’
