(Trends Wide) — A federal judge in Texas issued an order Wednesday to block the state’s prohibition on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy.
District Judge Robert Pitman’s order is a victory for abortion rights advocates, who had seen other attempts to block the law hampered by the way the normal was designed. However, this victory may be only temporary.
At a hearing on Friday, an attorney for the Texas attorney general’s office made it clear that the state would appeal the order to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals if it was issued.
That appeals court – perhaps the most conservative in the country – previously rejected a petition by the clinics to block the law, as did the US Supreme Court.
