Turkish club Fenerbahçe has officially announced an agreement in principle to sign Mexican international Edson Álvarez for the 2025/2026 season. The midfielder is set to undergo a medical and finalize the transfer process, which will make him the first Mexican player to be managed by José Mourinho.
The 27-year-old joins the Istanbul-based club from West Ham United, where he played from 2023 to 2025. Fenerbahçe marks the fourth professional club in Álvarez’s career, which began in 2016 with his hometown team, Club América. After winning three titles in Mexico, he moved to Europe in 2019, joining Dutch powerhouse Ajax. During his four seasons in the Netherlands, Álvarez secured four championships before his transfer to the Premier League.
Álvarez’s new team is a giant of Turkish football, holding 19 Süper Lig titles, the second-most in the league’s history. However, the club has not been crowned champion since 2014 and faces the challenge of ending the recent dominance of their rivals, Galatasaray, who have won the last two consecutive league titles to bring their total to 25. With this high-profile signing, Fenerbahçe aims to reclaim the top spot in Turkish football.
