Initial box office tracking for 20th Century Studios’ Avatar: Fire and Ash, the final major film release of 2025, projects a strong opening weekend of $100 million to $130 million. The James Cameron-directed sequel is scheduled to debut on December 19.
Projections of this scale indicate the film has broad appeal across all major demographics, a key factor for blockbuster success. While this early tracking is slightly behind the initial figures for its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water (which opened to $134.1 million), the franchise has a unique viewing pattern. Unlike event films that drive immediate attendance to avoid spoilers, Avatar movies are considered “appointment viewing,” with audiences often seeking out premium experiences like 3D, IMAX, and other large-format screens over the course of the theatrical run.
For context, The Way of Water‘s initial tracking three years ago suggested a $150 million to $175 million opening, a figure inflated by comparisons to the record-breaking debut of Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260.1 million). The sequel’s actual $134.1 million opening was a significant achievement, arriving 13 years after the original film’s $77 million debut and serving as a practical benchmark for the new installment.
The franchise is renowned for its long-term box office endurance. The Way of Water ultimately grossed $688.4 million domestically—a multiple of more than five times its opening weekend—despite a major winter storm impacting its second week. Its global total reached $2.34 billion, making it the third-highest-grossing film of all time. The original Avatar demonstrated even more remarkable longevity, earning a final domestic total of $785.2 million, over ten times its opening weekend gross.
The financial success of Fire and Ash is critical for the series’ future. Director James Cameron has stated that he will not commit to producing a fourth Avatar film, for which some footage has already been shot, until the third movie’s performance is clear, citing the enormous production costs. The high bar for success was set by The Way of Water, which became the most profitable Hollywood film of 2022 with profits exceeding half a billion dollars.
Combined, the first two Avatar films have grossed $5.26 billion worldwide. This success has solidified Cameron’s unique position in cinematic history, as he has directed the first (Avatar, $2.92 billion), third (Avatar: The Way of Water), and fourth (Titanic, $2.26 billion) highest-grossing films of all time globally.
As of November 23, the 2025 domestic box office stands at $7.48 billion, up 3% from the same period in 2024. This total is expected to climb significantly with the upcoming Thanksgiving releases of Zootopia 2 and Wicked: For Good.
