Despite the economic revival, the Mexico City continues without recovering in terms of tourism. The main tourism indicators show that in the first half of 2022 the pre-pandemic times were not reached, revealed the report of the Tourist Activity of the local Ministry of Tourism (Sectur).
According to the report, from January to June of this 2022, the country’s capital presented a hotel occupancy of 50.65%well above 2020 with 28.51%, as well as 2021, with 23.70%, but still far from 2019, when levels reached 65.51 percent.
Regarding the arrival of tourists to the city and who stayed in hotels, the figure in this first semester was 4.4 million visitors, while in 2021 there were 2.5 million people, in 2020 with 2.7 million and in 2019 with 6.5 million guests.
The spending of tourists staying in hotels in the first six months of the year was 42,270.26 million pesos, while in 2021 these were 22,520.52 million. In 2020 with 23,027.44 million and in 2019 with 52,173.97 million.
In this regard, the head Secretary of Tourism of Mexico City, Nathalie Desplas, assured that levels of 55% have been reached in hotel occupancy and this should be taken as a good sign of recovery, even with these results a best second semester in terms of tourist attraction.
“Of course it is not difficult to exceed a year like this (2020), but that was done in a semester and that is already saying a lot. It represents 70% of what we had in 2019, which is the base year,” he said.
He deepened that the average cost of the tourist has increased individually, as well as the days of stay.
The report of the state agency indicated that from January to June the average expenditure per tourist staying was around 9,406.5 pesos, while in the same period of time but in 2021 it was 8,778.7 pesos, in 2020 8,261.2 pesos and in 2019 these were 7,907.2 pesos.
While the days of stay in this first semester were around 2.21 on average, while in 2021 they were 2.13 days, 2020 with 2.33 and 2019 with 2.18.

The head of the Mexico City Sectur stated that to achieve recovery, work is also being done to certify companies in terms of hygiene and prevention of Covid-19, with this also attracting foreign tourists.
“All the points, all the badges are very important to us and we are going to continue promoting. There is a long way to go but we appreciate your continued support and communication with us,” he said.
“Mexico City is a city of opportunities, growth and constant movement, which does not stop and in the Sectur we are very aware of the importance of you in the economic impact of the city, whose tourism has a 7% participation in the generation of the capital’s GDP. Mexico City is the favorite destination of national tourists and the second of the destinations of international tourists”, added the secretary.
