In December 2021, the gross fixed investment made by economic agents in Mexico grew 1.2% compared to the previous month and made two months of progress, according to figures published on Friday by the National Institute of Geography and Statistics.
Throughout the year, the indicator that encompasses business spending on machinery and equipment and on physical capital for construction activities, grew 10%, which was insufficient to recover from the 17.8% drop experienced during 2020 during the epicenter of the Covid-19 crisis.
In 2021, fixed investment was 9.6% lower than in 2019 and 14.2% lower than in 2016, the last peak of the indicator.
“Investment continues to be the ‘Achilles’ heel’ of the Mexican economy, since of all the components of aggregate demand it is the one that took the least advantage of the inertial rebound after the reopening of the economy and constitutes the main tie for comprehensive progress of the economy”, said the Monex Financial Group in a report.
