Heavy thunderstorms have caused significant street flooding in Whiteville, North Carolina, stranding some vehicles and rendering at least one major intersection impassable.
The Whiteville Police Department has confirmed that sections of East College Street near McKenzie Street are flooded. Whiteville Emergency Services also reported responding to cars that had become stuck in the high water.
According to the National Weather Service, 1.5 to 3 inches of rain has already fallen in the area, with ongoing storms producing rainfall rates of one to two inches per hour. The agency has issued a flash flood warning for northwestern Columbus County, which remains in effect until 8 p.m.
Authorities are urging residents to avoid the affected areas while crews work to clear storm drains. Officials also remind motorists not to drive through flooded roadways, noting that most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.
