(Trends Wide) — A 76-year-old woman is in custody after shooting her terminally ill husband in the head in what police say was an attempted murder-suicide at a hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Saturday.
The terminally ill 77-year-old man was hospitalized at Advent Health Hospital and made a plan with his wife three weeks ago to “liquid him” in case his health worsened, Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari E said. Young, at a press conference. Police did not specify the man’s illness.
The man had intended to shoot himself but was too physically weak to do so, police said. His wife, who later attempted suicide, said she “couldn’t move on,” according to Young.
The woman then barricaded herself in the hospital room.
Agents went to the hospital shortly after 11:30 am. and hostage negotiators made contact with the woman, whose identity has not been released. She was detained by police at about 3 pm, Young said.
Keeping other patients on the 11th floor, where the hostage situation occurred, was a “logistical nightmare” as many patients were on ventilators and could not be easily evacuated, he added.
The woman is in custody and could face a premeditated murder charge, according to Young.
“She is very sad, it is a difficult situation,” Young said.
It is unknown how the woman entered the hospital with a weapon and whether the hospital had a metal detection security system. It is also unknown what type of weapon was used in the incident.
Trends Wide reached out to AdventHealth for comment.
There is no longer a police presence at the hospital, according to Young.
Cardiologist hid in the supply room
Dr. Joshua Horenstein, a cardiologist at AdventHealth Hospital, was working in the emergency department when he learned of the shooting incident on Saturday.
“Someone came into the emergency department yelling that this was not a drill and to take cover,” he told Trends Wide as he hid in a supply room with a nurse.
Dr. Horenstein said he was finally able to get out of the supply room after hiding there for about 90 minutes.
Horenstein commented that this is the second time in his career that he has had to take refuge in a hospital due to a shooting. The first time happened in 2006 when she was doing an internship at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, California.
