The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the election of Egypt to chair the 15th session of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission to succeed Canada in an official meeting held on Tuesday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The ministry indicated in a statement that “this comes after the approval of the Egyptian nomination at the level of the African group in New York, so that Egypt would become a candidate representing Africa to take on this important international seat.”
She added, “The selection was made following Egypt’s re-election to the Peacebuilding Commission with the loudest votes in elections that witnessed great competition in December 2020.”
For his part, Egypt’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Mohamed Idris, affirmed that “Egypt’s election to head the Peacebuilding Commission for the first time has crowned the efforts of Egyptian diplomacy over a decade and a half in supporting the UN peacebuilding structure since its inauguration in 2005.”
He added, “This confirms the UN and African confidence in Egypt’s ability to continue to actively contribute to strengthening the role of the peace building system at the United Nations.”
