The San Francisco 49ers are confronting significant uncertainty within their wide receiver group as they prepare for their regular-season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. A series of injuries has left the coaching staff with critical decisions to make regarding the gameday roster and player roles.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Wednesday that the deployment of available receivers remains “very fluid.” He indicated that the team is still evaluating several players, including recent additions, and that the final plan will be determined by performance in the final days of practice. Shanahan noted that the team will likely activate five wideouts for the game.
The team’s depth has been severely tested, with multiple players sidelined. The current status of the receiving corps includes:
* Jauan Jennings (Calf, Limited)
* Jordan Watkins (Ankle, Out)
* Brandon Aiyuk (Knee, Physically Unable to Perform list)
* Jacob Cowing (Hamstring, Injured Reserve)
* Trent Taylor (Undisclosed, Injured Reserve)
* Demarcus Robinson (Suspended)
Despite being limited, there is optimism that Jauan Jennings will be able to play. If he is cleared, he is expected to start alongside Ricky Pearsall, who built strong chemistry with quarterback Brock Purdy during a standout training camp.
Behind the projected starters, Marquez Valdes-Scantling appears positioned to be the third receiver. The 49ers will also likely elevate at least one player from the practice squad, with veteran Russell Gage considered a leading candidate. Skyy Moore is another recent addition competing for a role.
Based on a 60-play offensive average from last season, snap counts could be distributed to manage the group’s health. Jennings may see a reduced workload after missing most of training camp, with veteran depth filling the remaining snaps. A potential breakdown could see Pearsall leading with approximately 55 snaps (92%), followed by Jennings at 47 (78%). Valdes-Scantling, Gage, and Moore are projected to see around 18 (30%), 14 (23%), and 8 (13%) snaps, respectively, though these roles will be finalized later this week.
