The 71-year-old Buyoya, who ruled the country for two terms, died last Thursday night in the French capital, Paris, as a result of his infection with the Corona virus, and is being buried in Mali, where he was staying, according to what his family said.
It is worth noting that Buyoya has held the position of Special Envoy of the African Union to Mali and the Sahel region since 2012, while he submitted his resignation last November, after he was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment in Burundi, on charges of assassinating his successor, Melchior Ndaday, in 1993, which is Buyoya denied it, saying that the ruling was “politically motivated.”
