In an interview with the Echo newspaper published on Monday, Vimon said, “Cross-border sanctions continue to be tightened, which have become a favorite weapon of American diplomacy seeking to hold accountable those who do not follow its political approach towards Russia and Iran.”
He added, “An increasing number of Europeans consider such behavior unacceptable. Berlin has realized this better than others after facing the (American) pressures due to the Northern Torrent gas pipeline 2. This issue also concerns European institutions.”
The French diplomat considered the “Northern Torrent 2” project to be economic, expressing his regret over the disagreements within the European Union, as a group of countries oppose it for political motives and believe that it is “excessively beneficial to the Russian economic interests.”
He indicated that the situation has not changed even after the end of the term of former US President Donald Trump, because Congress is applying pressure on the new executive branch led by Joe Biden to intensify sanctions against the project.
“We faced a similar situation under President Ronald Reagan in 1982 because of the (Soyuz) gas pipeline … We have to act in a proactive manner,” Femon said.
