Footy stars whose coach asked them for suggestions to help the side out of a form slump responded with ‘do more drugs’ and ‘have more p***-ups’

- Officials decided it was easier to fire him than keep players accountable
Gold Coast Titans players who were asked how to improve the side’s fortunes by former coach Garth Brennan reportedly responded with totally inappropriate suggestions like ‘do more drugs’.
Brennan was trying to help his team improve after a heavy loss in 2019 and asked senior players what they needed to do better in order to win.
The stars then told Brennan in anonymous written responses that they wanted to ‘make training shorter’, ‘have more p***-ups’ and ‘do more drugs’, Wide World of Sports reported.
Gold Coast coach Garth Brennan’s senior players gave him some very disrespectful responses when he asked them how to improve the side’s fortunes, it has been reported (Brennan is pictured during a training session on November 22, 2018)
Brennan was sacked by the team in July 2019 after a loss to Penrith left the Titans in last place on the NRL ladder.
The club was aware of the players’ responses and lack of respect for the coach but decided to dismiss Brennan instead of disciplining the footballers, according to the report.
‘No one at this organisation, or anyone involved in rugby league, wanted Garth’s time as head coach of the Titans to end this way,’ Titans executive chairman Dennis Watt said at the time of Brennan’s sacking.
‘However, the results the club has achieved on the field this season have not met expectations, and the team’s performance in recent weeks has fallen to a level that is unacceptable to the board, our members, fans, sponsors and partners,’ he said in a statement.
‘Unfortunately, that has left the club in a situation where Garth remaining in the position of head coach has become untenable.’
Justin Holbrook took over the coaching role on the Gold Coast for the 2020 season and led the club to a much-improved ninth-place finish, leaving the side just out of the finals.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted the Gold Coast Titans for comment.
