On Wednesday, the popular online game Fortnite experienced a major, unexpected outage, preventing thousands of players worldwide from accessing the title. The disruption, which caused “Fortnite down” to trend globally, was marked by widespread login failures, matchmaking errors, and connection issues across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
The problems began in the afternoon, with outage-monitoring platforms recording a sudden surge in user complaints. Players attempting to start the game were frequently met with error messages indicating a failure to connect to Epic Games’ servers. Many were unable to reach the game lobby, while others who managed to log in found themselves stuck in indefinite matchmaking queues.
Developer Epic Games promptly acknowledged the service interruption on its public status page and social media channels. “We’re aware of players being unable to login to Fortnite,” the company stated. “Our team is investigating the issue and we’ll follow up once the issue has been resolved.” The company confirmed the event was an unforeseen technical fault rather than scheduled maintenance.
After several hours, service was restored. At approximately 4 p.m. ET, Epic Games announced the resolution on X, formerly Twitter, stating, “The login issue preventing players from accessing Fortnite has now been resolved.” The developer added that some players might need to close and reopen their Epic Games Launcher for the fix to take effect.
