The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned Mexico that the fourth wave of Covid-19 infections that the country is already experiencing will be higher than that suffered last year.
In a virtual conference from Washington, Sylvain Aldighieri, PAHO Incident Manager for Covid-19, pointed out that data from the Ministry of Health (SSA) in Mexico indicates the above.
“We are observing an exponential growth curve of cases. yesterday, January 12, a record number was reached at the federal level with more than 33,600 new cases and also a record of active cases with more than 70,000 ”, he highlighted.
Thus, Aldighieri made a call not only in Mexico, but in general in America, to maintain preventive measures.
“It is not about seeing Ómicron as a simple flu, because although the evidence indicates that it does not generate a more serious or more lethal disease, we must consider all the people who have not yet been vaccinated in the region, as well as the who suffer from any comorbidity. In them, Ómicron can become serious, or very serious ”, he assured.
For her part, Carissa F. Etienne, PAHO director said that, compared to the same period last year, in the Americas region, there is a 250% increase in the number of infections,
The epidemic is triggered
The PAHO statements come just as Mexico reached 44,187 new infections, a figure that broke, for the third consecutive day, the record of cases in less than 24 hours since the pandemic began in March 2020.
The SSA announced that, as of January 12, at least four million 214,253 people have been infected nationwide, as well as 300,764 have died from the disease since the start of the pandemic in the country.
