The French police arrested five people as part of the investigation of threatening to kill a teenager named “Mila” after she published in November 2020 a controversial video clip criticizing Islam.
These people, who ranged between 18 and 29 years old, were arrested in several regions of the country, according to the Paris prosecutor.
The detainees were placed in police custody on charges of “electronic intimidation” and “threatening to kill” as part of the investigations conducted by the Department for Combating Hate Speech on the Internet, which was established recently and is affiliated with the Public Prosecution in Paris and was tasked with following up the investigation that the French judiciary began in mid-November of last year. .
Mila, who will be 18, received a torrent of threats and shared on “Twitter” death threats, some of which refer to the killing of teacher Samuel Patti.
“The death threat has become commonplace,” Milla’s lawyer, Richard Malka, told AFP.
“The state is working to protect Mila,” French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanan wrote on Twitter.
People threatened with death face up to three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros, and last year two people were sentenced to prison for threatening the girl with death.
Others were charged with investigating death threats in January.
These arrests come as French MPs discuss a bill on combating isolationism, with the aim of strengthening the fight against radical Islam, especially by combating hate speech on the Internet.
