The French Public Prosecution announced the opening of an investigation against the background of “insults of a racist nature and incitement to racial hatred”, directed at a participant in the Miss France contest that was held on Saturday.
In the past two days, anti-Semitic comments have spread via “Twitter” following the selection of April Pinayum as the first runner-up for Miss France.
During the election ceremony, the young woman spoke about her father’s Israeli origins, to meet with a wave of offensive comments that were widely condemned by the French political class.
Delegate Minister for Citizenship Marilyn Schiappa informed the Public Prosecution Office in this regard.
“Some tweets are still published, and this is not acceptable,” Schiappa said in statements to “BFMTV”. “Social networks should assume their responsibilities.”
And she continued, “This is a reference to those who drafted (these letters) to say that calling for hatred and making this kind of anti-Semitic statements is not an ordinary matter, since they, I hope, will be prosecuted and held accountable for their actions before the courts.”
In turn, Minister of Justice Eric Dupont-Moretti warned that the judiciary would “closely monitor” those who send anti-Semitic messages, while Interior Minister Gerald Darmannan expressed his “shock” at these comments, stressing that “the police and gendarmerie are on alert.”
In statements to “La Provence” newspaper, the first runner-up, April Pinayum, expressed her regret “because these things are still happening to us in 2020,” stressing the need to “mobilize forces to stop this.”
“I did not seek to provoke anyone, France is a diverse country, and beauty queens come from different origins, cultures and regions, and this is what brings beauty to this competition,” she said.
