The French Senate has approved this Saturday, with 195 votes in favor and 112 against, the unpopular pension reform plan of President Emmanuel Macron, a bill whose key measure is push back the retirement age by two yearsuntil the 64 years.
The upper house of the French Parliament voted on the text after a seventh day of protests across the country against the plan. The majority of voters oppose the text, according to opinion polls.
Now that the Senate has approved the bill, it will be reviewed by a joint committee of lower house and upper house lawmakers, probably on Wednesday.
If the committee reaches an agreement on the text, it is likely that a final vote will be held on Thursday in both houses, but the outcome of this one still seems uncertain in the lower house, the National Assembly, where Macron’s party needs the votes of its allies to obtain a majority.
If the Government fears that it will not have enough votes in the Lower House, it still has the possibility of moving forward with the text without a parliamentary vote, through the so-called 49:3 procedure.
A new day of strikes and protests throughout the country was scheduled for Wednesday.
