The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (It fits) reported that the fruits and oilseeds used to fill the traditional piñatas of the December holidays together generated a production value higher than the 17,456 million pesos at the end of 2021 and its supply is assured for this season.
According to data from the Agro-Food and Fisheries Information Service (READY) the harvest of orange generated 13,099 million pesos; sugar cane1,242 million pesos; peanut1,281 million pesos; I’m eating901.9 million pesos; Mandarin747.45 million pesos; lima162.5 million pesos and tejocote22.2 million pesos.
By volume, orange production totaled 4 million 595.00 tons, which places Mexico as the fifth largest producer in the world. Of this harvest, Veracruz contributed 2 million 272,000 tons; Tamaulipas, 688,237 tons; San Luis Potosí, 376,613 tons; Puebla, 308,434 tons, and Nuevo León, 232,437 tons.
Sugarcane totaled 237,793 tons in 2021. Of the 11 producing entities, Sinaloa contributed 128,400 tons; followed by Nayarit, with 46,467 tons; Puebla, 13,570 tons; Jalisco, 12,766 tons, and the State of Mexico, 12,663 tons.
The peanut volume totaled 102,779 tons, the highest amount in the last nine years. Of the 26 entities that harvested this legume, Chihuahua contributed 23,864 tons; Sinaloa, 22,166 tons; Chiapas, 17,622 tons; Puebla, 10,178 tons, and Oaxaca, 5,668 tons.
Jicama production closed last year with 242 million tons, of this figure, Nayarit recorded 85,763 tons; Guanajuato, 47 thousand 546 tons; Veracruz, 32,877, and Morelos, 29,569 tons.
The mandarin registered a production volume of 238,276 tons at the end of 2021, with Veracruz in the lead with 101,133 tons, which is equivalent to 42.44% nationally, followed by Puebla with 62,686 tons; San Luis Potosí, 21,946 tons; Yucatán, 16,000 tons, and Nuevo León, 14,341 tons.
Lime, another essential citrus for the piñata, closed last year with 29,371 tons. Jalisco contributed 22,157 tons, which is equivalent to 75.44% of the national production, followed by Puebla, with 3,187 tons; Michoacán, 1,100 tons, and Durango, 836 tons.
The hawthorn harvest reached 5,252 tons. Puebla contributed 5,107 tons, which is equivalent to 97.25% of the national production. This fruit is also harvested in Chiapas, which contributes 51%; Mexico City, 43 tons; Jalisco, 27 tons, and the State of Mexico, 23 tons.
