Fundación Banorte signs an alliance with UNESCO in favor of social inclusion in Mexico

Fundación Banorte and UNESCO in Mexico signed an alliance with the objective of strengthening social inclusion in the country.

The agreement was signed by the representative of UNESCO in Mexico, Frédéric Vacheron, and the Director of Fundación Banorte, Jimena Prado Lebrija, and through this a series of joint works are formalized that will be carried out until the year 2030.

The objective, Banorte explained, is to improve and expand the foundation’s social inclusion programs, with an intercultural, gender, human rights and cultural rights perspective.

In a statement, he explained that the alliance is already working on a joint project that will benefit the living conditions of artisan women in the textile sector and their communities in 12 municipalities of Yucatan.

This initiative will include the implementation of a framework of social indicators for local governments (the Culture Indicators | 2030), as well as the monitoring and evaluation of activities in the communities.

As part of the activities that the alliance will undertake, a prior diagnosis will be carried out and training will be offered to artisan women, cooperative leaders and collectives from the municipalities of Chacsinkín, Dzán, Espita, Halachó, Huhí, Izamal, Muna, Tahdziú, Tekit , Temozón, Tixkokob and Valladolid, in Yucatán, on local business models and financial education.

In addition, dialogues with an intercultural approach will be developed, where people are at the center of decision-making so that, through their economic activities, the recognition of the vital links between art and textile production, with social practices and relations, is strengthened. , environmental and cultural.

Support the role of women

Banorte explained that a key part of the project is to support the role of women to promote environmental balance and sustainable, fair and equitable development.

In this way, he pointed out, it will also seek that the men of the communities act for the safety and dignity of women, and that they recognize and promote the position that they can decide to occupy. This will build on proposals from the UNESCO Transforming MENtalities initiative.

According to Banorte, the alliance seeks to multiply and strengthen the proposals to respond to the worsening of various problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenge of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, the action plan of the United Nations for people, planet and prosperity.

“This project, which we will be implementing together with Fundación Banorte, will improve the quality of life of the Yucatan artisan sector, particularly women, by strengthening their business, financial and cultural management skills. Likewise, it will contribute to bring about changes in the way in which men learn to recognize women weavers as social, economic and cultural pillars of their community”, commented Frédéric Vacheron.

For her part, Jimena Prado Lebrija mentioned that the alliance with UNESCO will allow it to continue positively impacting the lives of many people.
