(Trends Wide) — A rescue team in Wyoming said the great attention paid to the Gabby Petito case helped them find remains believed to be of another missing person in the same national forest where Petito’s remains were found.
The remains that match Robert “Bob” Lowery’s description were found Tuesday at the base of the Teton Pass, more than a month after they were last seen. The Houston father-of-two traveled to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Aug. 19, according to Trends Wide affiliate KPRC.
Lowery, 46, was last seen Aug. 20 carrying a black duffel bag with a sleeping bag and a tent, according to the Teton County Sheriff’s Office.
It is said to have been on the Black Canyon Trail in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, near Grand Teton National Park. The trail is popular with hikers and mountain bikers in the summer, according to police.
The Bridger-Teton National Forest is the same place where Gabby Petito’s remains were discovered on September 19. In the days since he was reported missing, Petito’s story has made headlines across the country, prompting digital detectives to trace his trail online to try to solve the case.
History has also revealed the tens of thousands of missing persons stories that do not arouse such intense interest. By the end of 2020, there were nearly 90,000 active missing person cases in the United States, according to the National Crime Information Center.
A boost to the Lowery case
Lowery’s disappearance had been carried forward, but due to new leads, a search and rescue team was deployed on Tuesday, according to a Teton County Search and Rescue news release.
“The extensive news coverage of the search for Gabby Petito helped shed light on Lowery’s case and resulted in at least two members of the public calling local authorities this past weekend with new information about the possible latest point in the one who was seen, “the search and rescue team said.
Volunteer hikers and a team of search dogs helped uncover the remains that match Lowery’s description.
“Around 1pm, a team of dogs located a body and a black Nike duffel bag out of the way, on a steep, wooded hillside,” the press release reads. “Collectively, the search teams walked more than 120 kilometers and covered almost 7 kilometers of elevation.”
Authorities are still investigating the cause of death.
“Bob has been a wonderful father, son, brother and friend,” Lowery’s family said in a statement issued Tuesday to Trends Wide affiliate KPRC. “Our family wants to thank the media and others involved in seeking our privacy at this difficult time,” he added.
