The latest TikTok food trend has Gen Z freezing unlikely vegetables and grating them onto different creations, with one particularly popular variation of the fad being ‘tomato ice toast’.
This involves freezing a large whole tomato and then shredding it over a piece of toast, which is sometimes accompanied by a lump of burrata cheese or a glug of olive oil.
Another creative user branded his shredded tomato, cucumber, and red onion salad a ‘savoury granita’ (a sort of sorbet).
The trend has left foodies baffled with many questioning why amateur cooks can’t stick to vegetables in their usual fresh form.

Creators of the ‘tomato ice toast’ have sold the recipe as ‘refreshing’ while another describes it as a way to ‘beat the heat’.
In one video by the cooking creator, London based Mads, who uses the username @cripanddip, she attempts to try the frozen dish, grating a whole tomato and peach for the clip.
The content creator proceeds to shave several etching of tomato and peach onto a slice of bread also covered in cheese spread.
Before trying, she noted her concerns for the dish would be that it would be ‘too much like a dessert’ and not have a strong enough tomato flavour.
After digging her teeth into the icy slice, she immediately noted the uncomfortable sensitivity on her teeth.
The creator confirmed her suspicions that the tomato flavour was notably ‘subtle’ and that she would have overall rather had the Spanish tomato dish, pan con tomate – which involves grating fresh tomatoes over bread.
And the trend isn’t just restricted to cold tomatoes, but has individuals grating all types of fruits and other vegetables, in a bid to offer the most ‘refreshing’ frozen dish.

After whipping up the ‘refreshing’ tomato dish, Danielle seemed fairly unimpressed, admitting that the viral creation was nothing on the fresh tomato.
‘It was very refreshing and a nice switch up but doesn’t beat a regular tomato,’ she confirmed.
