The Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, revealed the security preparations that preceded the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin on January 7 last year to Damascus.
Gerasimov said that it was decided to spread the visit as if to Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, not to President Putin.
He added, “We had to organize the implementation of all these tasks to ensure the safety of the visit, without revealing the essence of the plan and the purpose of these events,” noting that the Russian Minister of Defense was there (in Syria) more than once, without taking security measures like the one It was decided to take to secure President Putin’s visit.
He pointed out that preparations for Putin’s visit were carried out in secret, despite the necessity of verifying the entire movement route in Damascus and the possibility of electronic warfare, removing mines from the road and adjacent buildings, and inspecting buildings by specialists in radiation, chemical and biological protection.
According to Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, a full and in-depth assessment of all potential threats has been carried out.
Putin visited Damascus on January 7, 2020, and meanwhile, he visited the Russian Armed Forces Command Center in Syria and held talks with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
He also drove his car through Damascus, and visited the Church of the Virgin Mary, and one of the oldest mosques in the world, the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus.
