German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the extension of the lockdown measures imposed in the country to limit the spread of the Coronavirus until March 28.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Merkel indicated that local authorities in German states will be able to make decisions on easing restrictions, according to the epidemiological situation in each particular state.
Merkel said: “We have to take steps to lift the lockdown, but we must be careful not to take us backwards,” adding that “Spring 2021 will be different than it was in 2020.”

Merkel confirmed that she had agreed with state governors on a five-stage plan to ease the restrictions of Corona, and to reopen shops in the event that the infection rate fell to less than 50 cases per 100 thousand of the population.
The plan also provides for the return of lockdown measures in the event that infection rates rise to more than 100 cases per 100,000 residents.
Merkel expressed her conviction that vaccines will allow an exit from the epidemic, saying that Germany is entering a new phase of the epidemic with hope.
She confirmed that private clinics will be able to vaccinate people against the Corona virus from late March or early April, and that free tests to detect Corona will be available starting next week.
