German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer reported on Sunday that the number of asylum applications in the country has decreased by more than 30 percent in 2020 compared to 2019.
The country’s authorities registered 76,000 asylum applications last year, a decrease of 31.5 percent compared to 2019, while most of the applications were submitted by Syrian, Afghan, Iraqi and Turkish citizens.
Seehofer explained that the decrease in orders can be partly explained by the Corona pandemic, which has caused borders to close, especially in the spring.
He added that the decrease in these requests “also shows that the measures we have taken to control immigration are effective.”
