Parliament Speaker, President of the Ennahda Movement in Tunis, Rached Ghannouchi, confirmed during press statements on Thursday, his commitment to respect the movement’s rules of procedure and not to change it in order to re-run him.
He stressed that he is not a trustee for others, referring to the initiative of leaders of the movement to re-nominate him for the presidency of Ennahda, although the rules of procedure do not allow this.
He added, “Tunisia is on the right track as long as it has free media, recognized parties, fair elections and a strong civil society … but this does not mean that Tunisia has achieved everything it wants.”
He emphasized that the success of the revolution does not mean solving all economic and social problems. Rather, the success of the revolution is the overthrow of dictatorship and the establishment of democracy, indicating that Tunisia has presented testimony to the world that Arabs are worthy of democracy.
He added, “Providing jobs and good infrastructure is an effort and creative activity, a unified national description and vision, which has nothing to do with the success of the revolution or not.”
Regarding normalization with Israel, he affirmed his country’s rejection of the wave of Arab normalization with Tel Aviv, saying that “Tunisians do not meet on something like meeting in solidarity with the Palestinian cause, as the Palestinian issue is a sacred issue in our country.”
“This is a red line that no one crosses,” Ghannouchi said, adding, “We are in a state of unanimity to support the Palestinian cause and strongly oppose every normalization and all that the brutal occupation practices in infringement on the rights of the whole nation and the rights of the authentic Palestinian people.”
He explained that “the rejection of normalization is not a matter of discussion in Tunisia, but rather a matter of consensus.”
