MARCY, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul is pushing for all 14 people involved in the “use of force” death of 43-year-old Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County.
In a statement, the governor said that she directed Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) Commissioner Daniel Martuscello to begin the termination process for those 14 people. Gov. Hochul said this comes after she asked for an “internal review of the circumstances” that lead to Brooks’ death.
According to reporting from the Times Union, sources describe Brooks’ death as extremely disturbing based on the beating recorded on body camera footage. Times Union journalist Brendan Lyons reported that Brooks was handcuffed when he was beaten to death, based on accounts from two people familiar with the matter.
The New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations (OSI) is reviewing the case. That’s the body that would decide whether to bring criminal charges forward for the guards who allegedly killed Brooks.
AG Letitia James released a statement Saturday afternoon promising footage will be made available to the public once Brooks’ family has had a chance to see it first.
“Law enforcement professionals must be held to the highest standards of accountability, and I am committed to providing New Yorkers with the transparency they deserve,” James said, “On behalf of the Office of the Attorney General, I offer my sincere condolences to Mr. Brooks’ family and loved ones.”
