Government of Mara Lezama signs the Declaration of Subnational Governments at COP 15

• The signatories commit to complying with actions to place nature on the path of its conservation and restoration by 2030.

Chetumal.- The state government headed by Mara Lezama Espinosa through the Secretary of Ecology and Environment signed the Declaration of Subnational Governments to promote actions for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, in which 27 entities of the country.

“In the signing carried out on the stage of COP 15 held in Canada, the signatories recognize the leadership of the Scottish government in the Edinburgh Process, in which the Mexican subnational governments signed the Edinburgh Declaration and we commend the support of the Mexican Federal Government as the first signatory country of the same”, said the Secretary of Ecology and Environment, Huguette Hernández.

In this context, he explained that the subnational governments of Mexico also recognize the importance of national and international processes to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity, especially in contexts such as the one currently experienced as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, where It shows that the effects on nature are not limited to the environment, highlighting in turn the cooperation between subnational jurisdictions as a key element to face global crises.

The adoption of the Post-2020 Global Biological Diversity Framework by subnational governments will be essential for the fulfillment of more ambitious actions that allow nature to be placed on the path of its conservation and restoration by 2030, achieving a true harmonious coexistence with her to 2050.

Among the commitments acquired, the following stand out: strengthening technical capacities, in coordination with research centers and local universities, to execute actions that promote changes, with the purpose of achieving the mission by 2030.
As well as, align state biodiversity strategies and other local planning instruments with national commitments for compliance with the Post-2020 Global Framework for Biological Diversity, in addition to strengthening subnational legislation, in harmony with the national one, to guarantee co-responsibility of the productive sectors and society in general, in the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
