Government of the 4T has invested 3,000 million pesos in self-production of housing: Sedatu

Through the National Housing Policy, coordinated by the Secretary of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu), the current government of Mexico has sought to promote access to adequate housingespecially among women and vulnerable groups, through self-production actions.

According to the Undersecretary of Territorial and Agrarian Planning, Edna Elena Vega Rangel, so far, the current administration has invested 3,000 million pesos in the delivery of more than 980,000 subsidies for self production.

This was reported by the official at the XXXI General Assembly of the Forum of Ministers and Highest Authorities of Housing and Urban Planning of Latin America and the Caribbean (Minurvi), which was held at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal), in Santiago de Chile.

Vega Rangel stressed that the self production with technical assistance constitutes an instrument to guarantee the human right to adequate housing. It is worth mentioning that in Mexico, there are 35.2 million homes, of which 8.5 million have a housing gap.

One of the government’s actions to guarantee an inclusive territory has been to promote reforms such as Article 4 of the Constitution to eliminate the term “decent housing”, since, according to Vega Rangel, this is subjective and there is no way to specify what it means for all people.

For this reason, the decision was made to replace the concept with that of “adequate housing”, which includes seven specific elements established by UN-Habitat: security of tenure, availability of services, affordability, habitability, accessibility, location and cultural appropriateness.

“When people materialize their human right to a adequate housing the reduction of social and economic inequalities is encouraged, to a lesser or greater extent”, said the undersecretary of Sedatu.

It should be noted that the Minurvi Forum is the space for intergovernmental coordination and cooperation; the ministers of state and the government authorities of Latin America participate, issues related to living place and the sustainable development of human settlements.
