Government pressures the weakest party for electoral reform: PAN

The national leader of PAN, Marko Cortesaccused Morena and the federal government of pressuring the most “weak” opposition party to achieve approval of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s electoral reform initiative.

In clear reference to ATbut without mentioning it, the PAN member Marko Cortés affirmed that the government intends to coerce again “the weak opposition party (to) impose an electoral arbitrator in order to align councilors and magistrates to its will, just as it did in the failed strategy of militarization, in such a way that they allow it to go to the electoral processes without balances or rules.”

He assured that President López Obrador does not like counterweights, “because he wants to be the absolute power and, therefore, by pressing the weak opposition party, he will try to approve new rules that favor him and his party in the next presidential elections.” .

The party leader stressed that after the AT breached its commitment to the constitutional moratorium, the PAN will defend its electoral reform proposals, “which would make a difference, since they defend Mexico and its institutions and shield the electoral system from any democratic regression,” he said.

He explained that some of the PAN proposals consist of the incorporation into the Constitutional text of novel figures in electoral matters: incorporate the second round in electoral matters for the election of the President of the Republic, the annulment of the election due to the participation of organized crime, as well as reducing over-representation in the Chamber of Deputies and regulating the government’s social communication, among other measures.

“The weak opposition party will once again be on trial, but whatever they do, Mexico will continue to count on the consistency and firmness of Acción Nacional, we will act without hesitation in defense of democracy, because it is our conviction and it is also the mandate that we receive from the electorate in 2021,” he asserted.

Cortés Mendoza guaranteed that the PAN legislators will not let pass an electoral reform that threatens the National Electoral Institute, the Local Public Organizations and the Electoral Court of the Judicial Power of the Federation and local courts.

“The president wants to destroy our democracy, he wants to end transparency, accountability, he is against autonomous bodies, free expression and decision; of the bodies that carry out audits, which question. And he has an aversion to any critical institution that forces him to render accounts and make public information transparent or that calls into question the supposed achievements that he proclaims daily, ”he said.
