Romain Grosjean has revealed that his children designed a helmet for him to wear during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix before a dramatic crash in Bahrain last month ruled him out of the final race of the season.

The Haas driver took pictures of the design by sons Sacha and Simon and daughter Camille and posted them on his Twitter and Instagram accounts, describing the helmet as ‘the most beautiful I could imagine’.

Among those to reply was his team-mate Kevin Magnussen, with the Dane saying: ‘That’s so beautiful man.’

Sitting near the back of the pack, Grosjean manoeuvred his way across the track before clipping the AlphaTauri of Daniil Kvyat and smashing into the steel barrier at turn three at 140mph.

His car split in half – the first this has happened in Formula One since 1991 – and was engulfed by a massive fireball as his visor melted, with Grosjean helped from the wreckage by FIA doctor Ian Roberts having been in the flames for 18 seconds.

The race was red-flagged before restarting more than an hour later, with Lewis Hamilton eventually emerging victorious.

Grosjean miraculously escaped with just burns to his hands, but was forced to withdraw from the final two races of the season.

It means he will no longer race for Haas after agreeing to leave at the end of this year. Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi has taken Grosjean’s seat for the end of this season.

The 34-year-old revealed on Thursday that he was ’50 per cent back’ to full health and released a picture of his healing right hand, having been released from the Bahrain Defence Force Hospital on Wednesday last week and returned to the track to thank those people who helped save his life, most notably Dr Roberts and medical car driver Alan van der Merwe.

The ‘halo’ – the titanium and carbon device around the cockpit that protects a driver’s head – has been widely credited with saving Grosjean’s life.

Grosjean admitted he hadn’t been a fan of the halo initially, but speaking from hospital after his accident acknowledged ‘it’s the greatest thing that we brought to Formula One and without it I wouldn’t be able to speak to you today’.
